As per a report in the Korean media, Samsung will be the major supplier for 7.9-inch Retina displays for iPad mini 2 that will release this season. Korean outlet, ET News, claimed that Apple ran into yield and quality issues with alternative suppliers Sharp and AU Optronics. That leaves Samsung as the major source of 7.9-inch display screens with a resolution of 2,048 x 1,536, which is the same as the most recent iPad.
Samsung will ship the displays in Q3 and Q4 this season. While Apple does also provide some business to LG Display, it still must use Samsung as a big parts supplier for its products. This connection was shaken recently because of a spat of cases worldwide over each others’ smartphone and tablet PC products. Regardless, relations between Apple and Samsung Display have allegedly better recently, and Samsung isn’t likely to lose its position as an Apple supplier in the near future.
