Danish Kaneria accused in cricket fixing plot ‎

Ex- Pakistani spinner Danish Kaneria has been named yesterday in the Mervyn Westfield cricket fraud that has rocked English county Essex. Kaneria has been accused of persuading the cricketer to participate in a sports betting fraud.

Westfield, the initial English player to be punished for spot-fixing, accepted being paid 6,000 pounds to bowl so that a particular number of runs were scored in the initial over of a game between Durham and Essex in Sept . 2009.

A different charge of helping another guy to cheat at betting was ordered to lie on the file. Kaneria was detained but not charged during the inquiry at the Old Bailey. Mark Milliken-Smith lawyer, for Westfield, advised the court: “It is clear, we submit, that Danish Kaneria and his Indian associates targeted Westfield.”

PCB hadn’t selected Danish Kaneria in the national squad ever since he was arrested in the case and had told the cricketer that he’d be considered for selection only after approval from its Ethics Commission.
