Punjab CM Shahbaz Sharif, while averring that Pakistan cannot afford another ‘bad incident’, has said there should be no point-scoring on the issue of water and all problems should be resolved through joint understanding. He was addressing the Punjab Assembly on Wednesday after the opposition members’ speeches regarding the closure of Chashma-Jhelum Link Canal, and alleged loss of Punjab’s water share.

Shahbaz criticised the Opposition for being the supporters of dictator Pervez Musharraf and said the conspiracy to create a conflict between Sindh and Punjab would be foiled, as it was only a wishful thinking. He reiterated his stance that Punjab neither would take a single drop of water from the share of Sindh nor would it surrender its own. “The dictator pushed Pakistan to the verge of disaster and the country is still facing the negative effects of his policies,” he said.
He said Irsa would be reconstituted in accordance with the Constitution and the supremacy of the Constitution would also be upheld. “The Prime Minister has the right to nominate Irsa members from any part of the country,” he said.

Shahbaz said Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa were the bastions of Pakistan and would strengthen the country collectively. He said during the meeting presided over by the prime minister the other day, he (Shahbaz) highlighted the wrongdoings committed by the dictator with regard to the formation of Irsa, adding that in order to take remedial measures, the meeting of Irsa Wednesday would consider reorganisation of the institution in accordance with the law.
The CM paid tributes to his counterpart from Sindh Qaim Ali Shah, who had stated in that meeting that he had cordial relations with the CM Punjab, which would help resolve the issue on the pattern of the NFC Award.
