President Zardari turned down on Saturday arguments raised by Leader of the Opposition in the NA Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan over the nomination of Admiral (retd) Fasih Bokhari as chairman of the NAB and says the selection was “strictly in accordance with the law.
Zardari’s spokesperson Farhatullah Babar released to the press on Saturday evening copies of the letter delivered to Chaudhry Nisar by the president. The president in his mail thanked Leader of the Opposition “for involved in the consultative process as mandated by the law” in the nomination of Admiral Bokhari as NAB chairman and mentioned the hope that the retired naval chief “ will serve the institution in the ideal approach ”.
Source told that President Zardari had signed all 3 pages of the letter delivered to Chaudhry Nisar in reply to his Oct 13 letter explaining the govt selection as breach of the Constitution. Chaudhry Nisar had mentioned to different instructions of the superior courts and says the govt should have delivered him names of a group of nominees, instead of informing him about the selection.
President Zardari in his mail, however, made it clear that the name of Fasih Bokhari had been suggested according to the terms of the National Accountability Ordinance 1999, which was the “existing law at the point of time” and PM had also “concurred to the suggestion ”.
