The Pakistan People’s Party govt believes in freedom of media as it assisted improve the roots of democracy in the state, Information and Broadcasting Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira mentioned on Monday. Addressing participants of a journalists’ demonstration in front of the Parliament House, the minister said, “We believe that unless we have free media, it will not be probable to maintain and develop the democratic norms. Journalists have rendered great sacrifices for the restoration of democracy in the country.” Kaira said PPP workers and journalists had always struggled jointly for the restoration of democracy, and the relationship would continue in the future.
The media always played a key role in restoring democracy, besides providing support to the government in the war against terrorism, he added. The minister said the government believed that media criticism was an important part of the accountability process, adding, “It is important for every democratic government for good governance to utilise the media’s role as a society watchdog.” The minister expressed concern over the increasing attacks on journalists, which has resulted in recent deaths of three journalists.
