PEMRA on today has suspended licence of Geo News television for 15 days along with a fine of Rs10 million for maligning country’s top intelligence agency.
The govt body took the decision on a complaint submitted by the Ministry of Defence. Sources said the PEMRA has officially informed the channel not to air its transmission for 15 days. On April 24, PEMRA released a show-cause notice to Geo News on the behest of Ministry of Defence for violating the code of conduct while covering attack on popular anchor Hamid Mir.
The ministry said Geo had maligned armed forces by displaying picture of ISI chief Lt. Gen. Zaheer-ul-Islam following the gun attack on Hamid Mir in Karachi on April 19. The channel through its telecast tried to involve ISI in Mir’s attack.
The ISI had vehemently rejected the allegation.
