Federal Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira on Wednesday explained that the government would review the suggestion made by PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif about the establishment of an independent flood relief commission.
Briefing media people at the PID Media Center here, he said the federal government would hold a special meeting of the chief ministers on Thursday to listen to their apprehensions and views about the flood situation.
“We will first address the apprehensions of provinces before reaching a final choice regarding the flood relief commission,” he mentioned.
Kaira said the federal government is paying more attention to supply medical materials in flood-hit areas to prevent possible crisis.
He said the government has preliminary information about the loss of life and home in the affected regions. However, correct numbers will be released after a thorough assessment.

The flood-related issues have generated unnecessary bickering among different political parties and regional interests but the most intriguing proposal was offered by Nawaz Sharif to set up a high-powered commission of non-controversial individuals to manage the collection of funds and relief and reconstruction work. The suggestion seems just an eye wash as practically PML-N did nothing except blaming govt and giving suggestions. Also it was an impractical idea. If the commission is not given administrative and management powers, it cannot fulfill its obligations. If it is given powers to manage all flood-related affairs, what will be the role of the federal government? It seems that Nawaz Sharif wanted to exclude the PPP-led federal government from managing flood-related foreign and local assistance and reconstruction and rehabilitation work. He also wanted to reduce the autonomous role of the army in flood-related affairs by making the commission the supreme body. PML-N is looking for some political mileage as it is habitual what ever this issue is.
