Army chief calls emergency Corps Commanders meeting

Army chief Army chief Ashfaq Kayani on Sunday called a ‘special’ gathering of his leading commanders to talk about the safety scenario, the army says, as the war of words with the America escalated.

The unusual conference of the corps commanders came against the backdrop of clear American claims that Pakistan army’s secret agency backed the Haqqani militant group Washington blames for the latest assault on its embassy and other targets in Kabul. In a terse two-line declaration, the army says the commanders would “review (the) current safety scenario.

Army chief Kayani, who’s departing for London later tonight to address the International Institute for Strategic Studies and the Royal College of Defence Studies, is chairing the gathering.“The conference shows the seriousness of crisis,” retired general, turned safety expert, Talat Masood says.

“They will issue a declaration to convey solidarity (within the army) and to present that they all are on one page.”The corps commanders conference comes a day after Army chief Kayani met with American CENTCOM commander General James N. Mattis in Pakistan, but army spokesperson Major-General Athar Abbas says the 2 conferences were “unrelated.”
