Dav Whatmore, who led Sri Lanka to World Cup victory, arrived in Lahore to authorize an agreement to become Pakistan’s new head coach, an official said on yesterday.
Whatmore, who played 7 Tests and 1 ODI for Australia, coached Sri Lanka to the World Cup title in 1996 and also helped Bangladesh access the 2nd round in the 2007 World Cup in the Caribbean. Whatmore was selected by a three member coaching panel of the PCB after Waqar Younis left the post citing health problems in Sept last year.
Ex- Pakistan opener Mohsin Khan was hired temporary coach under whom Pakistan defeat Sri Lanka and Bangladesh and whitewashed England 3-0 in Tests before they went down tamely 4-0 in ODI and 2-1 in the T20 internationals recently. The head of the coaching panel Intikhab Alam validated Whatmore will authorize a legal contract.
“Whatmore and Julien Fountain have arrived here and Whatmore will authorize a legal contract as head coach of the Pakistan squad,” Alam explained, declining to give more information on the contract.
Whatmore will be Pakistan’s 4th overseas coach after Richard Pybus, Bob Woolmer and Geoff Lawson served in the past.
