Failing badly in their ongoing trip to New Zealand, India is in danger of losing their 2nd place in the ICC Test rankings if Australia wins their away series against South Africa starting on Thursday.
India is trailing the two-match series against New Zealand 0-1 after losing the initial by 40 runs on Sunday. South Africa is the clear leaders on the table with 133 ranking points, while Australia presently stays 3rd with 111 Test rankings points. South Africa will maintain the number-one place on the table irrespective of the result of the series. However, there will be a keen tussle between India and Australia for 2nd place.
Australia will move into 2nd place if they win the series, irrespective of the outcome in the 2nd Test between India and New Zealand in Wellington, starting from February 14. In case India doesn’t win the 2nd Test, Australia need just to draw the series to go into the next spot. However, if Australia was to lose the series, then there will be no change of positions on the table, the ICC said in a statement.
