Sri Lanka to use South Africa series to target No. 1 ODI spot

Sri Lanka wants to use their forthcoming ODI series against South Africa as a stepping stone towards the # 1 area in the world rankings, before next year’s World Cup. Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews said that getting the top place in the three-match series against South Africa is at the back of their mind.

However, Mathews added that the Sri Lankan team just wants to take it match by match, series by series and play good cricket. Sri Lanka will play 3 ODIs and 2 Test matches against South Africa, with the first ODI to be played on Sunday in Colombo. Sri Lanka is currently 3rd in the ODI rankings, while South Africa is 5th, with Australia being the top ranked country.

South Africa skipper AB de Villiers said that the forthcoming tour would be difficult because of the hosts great form. Sri Lanka won the World T20 event this year and they have returned from a successful tour in England where the team beat the home team in all 3 types of the cricket, the report added.
