Ex- fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has insisted Pakistan name Shahid Afridi skipper for next year’s World Cup. Afridi has captained the ODI unit on 34 occasions during a long 378-match career – and will likely be named in the team for the 2015 showpiece in Australia and New Zealand.
“Afridi is not a batsman, but his credentials as bowler and aggression in his attitude is more than enough to help him qualify as a captain of the national team,” Shoaib Akhtar said. Erstwhile skipper Waqar Younis, meanwhile, has succeeded Aussie Dav Whatmore as head coach.
Waqar Younis opening task may bring a one-off T20 International, 3 ODIs and 2 Tests against the Australia in the UAE between 3 October and 1 November. The 2015 World Cup campaign in Australasia, where Pakistan have been pooled along with India, West Indies, Zimbabwe, UAE, South Africa and Ireland, is also high on the agenda.
“I hope Waqar will bring changes that will be beneficial for Pakistan team in the future. He as a coach has to rise above everything and act as father figure in the dressing room,” added Shoaib Akhtar.
