Pakistan players Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif were found guilty yesterday of fixing parts of a test match in the most severe corruption scandal to hit the cricker in more than a decade.
11 yrs after South Africa skipper Hanse Cronje was suspended for life for taking bribes from bookies, a court at London’s Southwark Crown Court found ex- skipper Salman Butt and fast bowler Asif responsible of both counts of conspiracy to deceive and conspiracy to admit corrupt money as part of a gambling fraud.
The 12 jurors were unanimous in their judgement that both cricketers were responsible of conspiracy to deceive, but could only reach a 10-2 number judgement on the allegations that the pair took cash to do so. The court took 16 hrs to rule that Butt was responsible for both criminal acts and that Asif had intentionally bowled no-balls against England in August 2010. But it required another 3 hrs to decide by a 10-2 margin that Asif was also responsible for the more severe charge of taking money for the fix.
Salman Butt, Asif and Mohammad Amir, who had currently pleaded responsible to both allegations, could be jailed for up to 7 yrs when they’re sentenced in a few days.
