Ex- Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar thinks that Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammed Amir were given tough punishments in the spot-fixing scandal. In his initial interview on a Private channel since his retirement after the 2011 World Cup, Shoaib says he still felt for the 3 cricketers and their family members.
“I thought the prison term were too severe in context of their offences. In Britain, even a killer is out on bail. I think after imposing suspend on them, the prison phrases were really severe,” Akhtar says. Shoaib Akhtar who was visiting with the national squad for the ODI series that followed just after the spot-fixing scandal broke out on the 2010 trip to England says he’d observed up close the picture of Pakistan cricket take a beating.
“I have no idea but after they were suspended, the ICC almost ended their careers. After that it would’ve been much better if the court had charged fines and sentenced them to some social work instead of sending them in jail.”
“What occurred was really harmful for Pakistan cricket. Even now I don’t like to think about it, but I think for the family members of these cricketers. I even went to meet them.” Ex- Pakistan fast bowler also made it clear that he considered the period of ex- PCB chairman Ijaz Butt as the most severe he’d found in Pakistan cricket.
