The funeral was attended by director Karan Johar, actors Amitabh Bachchan, Anupam Kher, Shatrughan Sinha, Danny Denzongpa and lyricist Gulzar. Pran died last night in lilavati Hospital where he had been admitted last month.
His daughter Pinky told reporters: “He was not keeping well, he was very weak. His health was deteriorating,”
Pran featured in hit movies of his time like Amar Akbar’s Anthony and Zanjeer. He started his career as a hero in Punjabi films. Pran made a tremendous impact on Bollywood as a Villain in Dilip Kumar’s Ram Aur Shyam. He was the first actor to break stereotype by playing character roles as well.
He received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award this year in May but he was unable to travel to delhi to receive the award because of illness. The award was given to him at his home next day.
In the 70’s, there was almost no major film that did not feature Pran and he was aften higher paid than the hero. He was credited with making the role of the Villain as important as the hero’s. He was known for his sophistication and style on screen.
One of his last appearances was at Amitabh Bachchan’s 70th birthday party in October last year.
The actor was also credited with helping Amitabh Bachchan get his biggest break – Zanjeer, which marked the rise of the angry young man and made Amitabh famous. Pran’s most popular roles were Pathan Sher Khan in Zanjeer.
Pran and Amitabh Bachchan formed a long and successful screen partnership after Zanjeer and struck up a long-life-friendship.
The late actor’s other famous films are Naseeb, Half ticket, Madhumati, Kashmir Ki Kali, Shahenshah, Karz, don and Upkar. His last appearance on screen was 1997’s film Mrityudaata.
Pran is survived by his wife Shukla, sons Arvind and Sunil and daughter Pinky.
